What is Apitherapy?
“Api” comes from the word “apis” which means “bee.” Apitherapy is an alternative therapy which uses honeybee products, such as venom, honey, pollen and propolis.
Bee products have been used as medicine for millenia. Proponents claim that apitherapy applied topically, taken orally, or injected into the blood will treat:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Pain (from arthritis)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Thyroid dysfunction
There is an American Apitherapy Society and there is an Apitherapy Certification Training Program, http://apitherapy.institute/curriculum/.
CAUTION: Some people are allergic to bee venom and other bee products. If you are one of those and you try “Bee Venom Acupuncture,” it could kill you: https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertglatter/2018/03/21/bee-venom-acupuncture-a-therapy-that-could-kill-you/?sh=442354326965. The foregoing article describes a situation in which a woman had been receiving treatments for 2 years and THEN had a fatal reaction.
Whether or not you die from a bee sting, the bee definitely will.
If you are allergic to bee products in general, this type of therapy would be dangerous. Anyone can experience milder reactions to any bee products, such as:
- Muscular weakness
- Uterine contractions
