Natural Home Remedies for Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)

Simply put, impotence is the inability in a man to achieve an erection or orgasm.

It’s normal for men to lose some virility as they age; it may take more stimulation to get an erection and it may not last as long, but that’s not quite the same thing as impotence..

RISK FACTORS

  • Age
  • Anxiety
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Drugs
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption
  • Heart disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Long-term Smoking
  • Low testosterone
  • Medications
  • Obesity
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Prostate Disease

PREVALENCE

Some estimates suggest that at age 40, about 40% of men suffer from ED (Erectile Dysfunction).  After age 80, it is about twice that.

ALLOPATHIC TREATMENT

Medical treatment may include vascular reconstructive surgery to improve blood flow. There are several medications that may help but all have dangers of unwated side effects.

SELF TREATMENT

DIET

Interestingly, some studies show that impotence is uncommon among men who eat a diet that includes fish, fruits, vegetables, whole grains (as opposed to highly processed ones), healthy fats like nuts and olive oil and a moderate amount of red wine; a Mediterranean diet. Depending on which part of the Mediterranean we are using for comparison, the Zone Diet is quite similar but is designed with a precise ratio of protein-carbohydrate-fat, designed to promote hormonal balance and heart health. It is not intended as a weight-loss diet, but a long-life diet.

If you have a healthy diet with a wide variety of wholesome (whole, fresh, living) foods and the proper ratio of the macronutrients, and you avoid all those things that are likely to depress your immune system and throw your hormones out of whack, then you have the best possible chance of being healthy. There may be other reasons for your troubles, but they don’t have to be the foods and drinks you ingest.

FOODS AND OTHER SUBSTANCES TO AVOID OR REDUCE

  • Alcohol makes it difficult to achieve an erection.
  • Caffeine
  • Excess red meat
  • Food additives
  • Fried, fatty foods>atherosclerosis>erectile dysfunction
  • Processed foods (pretty much just more sugar)
  • Smoking damages your blood vessels
  • Sugar; too much glucose and fructose can deactivate a gene that controls sex hormones (Journal of Clinical Investigation).
  • Trans fats

TEAS AND OTHER LIQUIDS

  • Ashwagandha
  • Ginger
  • Ginseng

OTHER SUBSTANCES AND SUPPLEMENTS

The cost of having a blood test to determine if you have nutritional deficiencies is likely to be negligible compared to over-consuming expensive supplements that you do not need.

  • Boron
  • DHEA supplements
  • L-arginine
  • Magnesium
  • Niacin
  • Panax ginseng
  • Zinc

HYDRATION

Water increases blood volume, which supports erections. Water is essential and a main nutrient for the human body. Without it, you cannot survive for many days. Staying hydrated is fundamental for a healthy body, so how much is enough? There are so many differences in people (i.e., how much we sweat), as well as the diets we consume (a lot of water comes from healthy, whole foods), but a general rule is to consume enough water that your urine is clear, but not so much that you dilute your nutrients. If you are taking certain supplements that make your urine yellow, then you can start out with the formula of drinking ½-1 ounce of water for each pound you weigh. If you weigh 130 pounds, drink 65 to 130 ounces of water a day. Definitely drink when you are thirsty.

EXERCISE

Pelvic floor exercises may improve performance by strengthening the muscle that allows the penis to fill with blood. That exercise is beneficial for overall health is undisputed. If you are ill, you will want to take it easy, of course, but there is always something you can do to support your body. Do what you can do without making yourself feel worse. Exercise in fresh air whenever possible.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Stress will play havoc with your libido. Stay calm. Anxiety undermines health in many ways. Practice relaxation exercises, meditate, talk to a friend. Do what works for you to keep mellow.

OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO

  • Get your blood pressure under control.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight.
  • Check with your doctor about replacing any offending medications.
