A peptic ulcer refers to an open sore either in the stomach or intestines—one that does not heal naturally. If there is a change in the mucous lining that protects against acid, it may create a sore. It might be a result of a bacterial infection and can be caused or exacerbated by the long-term use of aspirin, NSAID’s, Advil or other medications.

If a peptic ulcer occurs on the inside of the stomach, it may be referred to as a gastric ulcer. If it is on the inside of the upper portion of your small intestine, it is a duodenal ulcer.
